Old Town Kitchen (Fortitude Valley)

Dinner was at Old Town Kitchen
at Brunswicks Street Mall, Fortitude Valley
Opposite the Police Station

Meals are priced at an average of AUD15
Singapore/Malaysian-styled Cuisine
Kinda like your 烧腊+煮炒 stalls..

Wait a min..
When we see TIGER BEER at Singapore's Specialty Shop
sold together with our Kaya, Chilli Crab Gravy, Kaya Jam etc
we have always know that Tiger Beer is from Singapore!
So is Tiger Beer from Singapore or Malaysia?

Tiger Beer is a brand from Asia Pacific Breweries (founded in 1931)
Headquarters: Singapore
The beer was first launched in 1932 as Singapore's first locally brewed beer
and was popular in Malaya in the 1950s
European-styled lager brewed with malted barley from Australia,
hops from Germany and yeast from Holland.
If you still insist that Tiger Beer is from Europe, Australia or Malaysia,
I think you have a drinking problem..

Beverage Quality: 6/10

Other Remarks: Do not try their Cendol to avoid disappointment!
Trust me cos I'm a huge Cendol fan plus my uncle
owns 2 cendol shopfronts at Jonker Street in Malacca, Malaysia.
However I'm very pleased that the establishment is always clean
except for non-uniformed staff walking in and out of the kitchen
chewing food in their mouth - rather disturbing.
Also, look out for a cute Malaysian girl, Mandy working there.

SONO JAPANESE RESTAURANT (City)

Lunch was at SONO Japanese Restaurant
Its at Level 1, Tattersalls Building
Corner of Queen Street Mall and Edward Street

If you're a fan of Maid's Cafe
This is the next best alternative you can get in Brisbane
REAL JAPANESE waitresses in KIMONO
(I emphasise in the word "real" cos they're not china/taiwanese girls in disguise)

BBQ Table with leg slots on convension tatami platform seats

Table was squeeky clean with consistent table settings

Lets take a look at the menu
an average meal here costs around AUD25

Nigiri is around AUD8.50 for 2 pieces

Ambience was awesome
Little cubicals for business lunch meetings
if you opt out of the sushi bar seats
Nice instrumental music for the mood

Green tea (free refill)
AUD2.50
Its not diluted like what you get in Hanaichi and Hanabishi

Condiment tray
Chilli flakes, Toothpicks, Soy Sauce

Salmon Nigiri Sushi
AUD8.00
Came in a nice fan-shaped china plate
With a kneaded ball of homemade wasabi and ginger
There is a need to emphasise it cos in Brisbane, they usually give you
small packets of factory mass-produced distasteful wasabe
Salmon came in an odd rectangular shape
Knife was either blunt or chef lacks skill
Taste mediocre
Rice was good, but its Jasmine rice

Tempura Udon
AUD22
Tasty! I have to give praise to the shrimp tempura.
It is not only ran under cold water for the chewy QQ-bite
The chef scaled it for the extra texture - Impressive!
Also found some yasai tempura inside which includes
Eggplant, 2pc Sweet Potato, Capsicum
Soup was tasty!

Zin ordered a Yasai Tempura Set Meal AUD20
Comes with a plate of Tempura, Jasmine Rice (why?), Chawanmushi (or Salad), Miso Soup
Amanuma ordered Tempura Don AUD 25
Jasmine rice as well - WHY?
There were some things Amanuma and myself finds unorthodox...
Tempura Brocolli and Cauliflower!
Take it either way - contemporary or out-of-track

Cute Japanese waitresses in Kimono
serving the dishes, clearing plates and refilling green tea
Awesome! The experience is just great!

Guess what?
John Travolta was here in November 2005!

nigiri falls apart easily
variety was disappointing
Return Factor: Probably Not

THE GUNSHOP CAFE (Brisbane)

BREAKFAST
The Gunshop Cafe

Its located about 30 steps from where I stay
Recommended by Mr. Ben Cassim

The ambience was lovely
Old school brick wall, fresh flowers
and steamed clean forks and knives

LUNCH

Went to The Gunshop Cafe for lunch
with International Student Ambassador (Brisbane), Kelly

The lunch menu looks interesting
and I'm very spoilt for choice

smoked chicken and avocado salad w. asparagus | marinated artichokes & macadamia pesto
AUD20.5o

seared hervey bay scallops | spanner crab & corriander mousse, tempura zucchini flowers | micro herbs and salad greens | nam jim dressing
AUD21.00
The scallops were actually fresh, not frozen!

The food looks awesome right?
Its super!
You have to eat it AT LEAST ONCE
during your stay in Brisbane!
